Power washing vs. soft washing
Too much pressure can strip paint, splinter wood and force water behind siding. Too little leaves mildew behind. The right method depends on the surface.
Go gentle on
- Vinyl and painted wood siding.
- Soffit, fascia and trim.
- Decks and fences, especially softer woods.
- Screens and windows.
Use more pressure on
- Concrete driveways, sidewalks and patios.
- Brick and stone, carefully, to avoid damaging mortar.
East Texas specifics
- Mildew loves the shady north side of a house; it needs cleaning solution, not just pressure.
- Red clay stains on concrete usually need a cleaner plus pressure.
- Pine pollen rinses off easily once the season ends.
